Antica Focacceria San Francesco
Sicily, Italy
You say “street food,” we say cucina di strada or, better, di piazza, since the Focacceria San Francesco takes its name from the famous square in Palermo, donated in 1834 by the Prince of Cattolica to the court cook. Almost 200 years later, the focacceria (now antica, or “ancient”) still serves the humble, yet delicious, specialties of Sicilian cuisine, such as pani ca’ meusa (spleen sandwich with sesame bread, caciocavallo cheese and cow offal) or arancina with meat ragù (the word for this deep-fried, round rice croquette is feminine in western Sicily, masculine on the eastern side of the island).
