Manchester newcomer Higher Ground (from the folks behind Flawd in Ancoats) self-describes as a “modern and thoughtful bistro.” It deals in small plates and low-intervention wines, , but goes the extra mile in sourcing many of its ingredients from its partner farm in nearby Cheshire. Grab a pew at the kitchen counter or gather friends around a table for a selection of sharing plates like coal-roasted leek with oyster mayo, hand-rolled wholewheat pasta with braised venison shin, cuttlefish-ink cured pork loin and Nantwich milk ice cream with shaved fudge. Gut Oggau, Nino Baracco, and Christian Tschida headline the wine list.
